June vs Mixpanel

Both June and Mixpanel are product analytics solutions. They will make you understand how your users and companies behave in your product. These learnings will ultimately be used to: improve the activation of your latest users, prioritize iterations on features and improve user retention.

June is the new, modern, way to get insights from your data. Not only can June be used by non-data-savvy people, it’s also built to meet the needs of modern B2B SaaS companies.

How is June different from Mixpanel?

These two products might look very similar at first but in reality, differences are multiple.

Firstly, Mixpanel was founded back in 2009 and their main focus is on large consumer applications whereas June was started 2 years ago and built for modern B2B SaaS.

Thousands of companies signed up for June, and hundreds switched from Mixpanel, to adopt the next generation of product analytics.

Hereafter the main reasons why:

  • It’s automated
June automatically generates the most important metrics for a B2B SaaS. Mixpanel requires good skills to get the same result. And if you want to go deeper, June has a ready-made template for pretty much every key metric a B2B SaaS should be tracking
  • It doesn’t require expertise
Everyone can start learning from data since the really the first session. You won’t need to have years of experience. No need to come up with a formula or read 3 articles to build a dashboard, June does everything out of the box. On the other side, getting insights from Mixpanel can be hard and it requires a long learning curve
  • It’s about getting insights, not exploring data
Unlike Mixpanel, which is mainly focused on displaying your data in every possible way, June is about getting closer to the most important accounts. Without any work, you’ll get who your power users and companies are, the ones that are drifting away and the ones that are becoming more and more active. Additional information such as traits can also be synced automatically to your CRM to make sure your sales team is always up to date and the best opportunities are exploited.

Features

Both Mixpanel and June have a vast set of features that you can use. Here’s an overview of them:

June’s strengths

Most B2B SaaS track the same high-level metrics: Active Companies, Company Retention, and Power Companies. June gives you all of this without you having to set it up.

Mixpanel can of course give you the same stuff but you’ll have to do the heavy lifting yourself. This is because they privilege the possibility of making you choose whatever visualization method over simplicity.

June helps hundreds of companies understand their user behavior through reports, without having to spend energy creating dashboards.

Assistance

Data analytics is not always simple. For this reason, June helps you focus only on a few, but relevant, metrics to get to know your users better. To help you craft relevant metrics and analyze them, June comes with ready-made templates and jargon-free actions step by step to make sure you move the needle.

Data visualization should not be the goal but a means to help you take action. For this reason, June’s reports come with built-in insights, detailed user lists, and product metrics benchmarks to understand where there’s room for improvement. June does not leave you alone with an infinite amount of data points you need to conclude from. It guides you.

We’re focused on startups and scaleups. Mixpanel is mainly focused on enterprise accounts. That means we’re always available to hop on a call with you to answer a question or fix a problem. For example, June offers a free consultancy call to help you design the tracking plan. This is because coming up with the right tracking and evolving it can be tricky. Especially when a complex tech stack is already in place. Shared slack channels are also an option for even quicker customer support.

Getting to talk with a human (that’s not in sales) is usually hard, we make it simple!

“The templated reports are a massive time saver. We currently use MixPanel and I'm exploring June as an alternative. While I'm sure I get most of the same insights I get from June in MixPanel, it just takes too much time to do it. I have to figure out how to construct the reports and this can take a lot of time and I'm never confident that I've done it right. With your template reports, I just choose the data I want to be involved in and have confidence the report is working as intended and I didn't have to spend ages figuring out how to build it”

Insights

June offers all the main metrics out of the box so that you can be on top of your users (and accounts!) without any effort.

Without doing any work or comparing different dashboards you’ll finally have an answer to these common-sense questions:

  • Which accounts are at churn risk?
  • Are my power users increasing over time?
  • Who are my most active users?
  • How many new users have I got today?

Everyone in a modern team should be up to date with what’s going on in your product. By using June instead of Mixpanel they’ll be able to get the insights themselves which will help them become more data-driven.

More grown-up companies also benefit from the simplicity of June because it frees up data analysts’ time by addressing the most frequently asked questions. In this way, analysts will be able to have the mental space to focus on the most complex questions. Here’s an example of how Hive.app, a 250 employees E-commerce operations company, is using June to prioritize iterations.

“Low effort / great insights when it comes to understanding our user’s behaviors”

B2B SaaS features

At June we’re building the next-gen analytics with a particular focus on B2B SaaS companies.

Users can be organized into companies (accounts) that can then be treated as unique entities in every kind of metric. From company-level funnels to retention, everything is the same as in the user-level metrics.

Most of these features are also available in Mixpanel, but they’re a +40% add-on. It’s also worth keeping in mind that Mixpanel was built more than a decade ago mainly for B2C apps with high volumes (mobile era).

June is also integrated with CRMs like Hubspot so that your team can interact with users with the right timing and messaging. This will help you identify ready-to-convert users and re-engage with the accounts whose engagement is decreasing.

June AI

June AI is a game-changer in the world of analytics. By leveraging the power of GPT-4, June AI now allows users to simply ask questions in plain English, which are then seamlessly translated into SQL queries to generate insightful reports. This revolutionary approach is set to redefine the way businesses conduct analytics, making it more accessible and user-friendly than ever before.

June has always been known for its simplicity and ease of use, but with this new GPT-4 integration, it takes its capabilities to a whole new level. Users can now ask even the most complex questions and receive detailed insights, all without needing any technical knowledge or experience in SQL.

Compared to Mixpanel's extensive setup process, June AI's new GPT-4 powered feature offers a much more efficient and user-friendly approach to analytics. Mixpanel often requires an elaborate and time-consuming setup involving the creation of specific events, properties, and segments to answer complex questions. This necessitates a deep understanding of the platform's structure and often demands the involvement of technical team members to ensure accurate tracking and analysis.

In contrast, June AI's groundbreaking feature simplifies the process significantly. By allowing users to ask questions in plain English, it eliminates the need for a complex setup or in-depth knowledge of the platform's mechanics.

Mixpanel’s strengths

Exploration

Mixpanel is among the most mature tools in the product analytics space and its main customers are Fortune 500 companies. For these reasons, the variety and depth of their features is unparalleled. If you are now a big company with very complex needs then you should consider going for Mixpanel instead of June to run statistical experiments on large datasets. Basically, if you’re more into data exploration and you have a complex data structure Mixpanel is a great tool.

Still there are companies that adopt June together with a BI tool like Metabase to be able to answer all the possible questions: the simple on-going ones with June and the most complex with the BI.

Visualization

In line with the previous section, to allow a great exploration of your data, Mixpanel has a variety of visualization options: from tables to piecharts. June instead, is all about simplicity and just gives you the easiest possible graph. Of course, exploring the data in a proper way requires skills and knowledge about how the data is structured so make sure to undertake that path only if you have clear goals. Similarly to Amplitude, Mixpanel also supports a basic layer of statistics so you’ll be able to run some experiments and get into confidence intervals, statistical significance etc.

These analyses along with A/B testing are used mainly in already established B2C companies to improve conversion rates. June is not suitable for these kinds of use cases.
